Insulation test

Identifying the type of fault by measuring the insulation resistance respectively fault resistance on the failed cable

Time Domain Reflectometry (Radar)

Runtime-based measurement of impedance changes in the cable using low voltage impulses; Generally very accurate technology to get a distance to the fault and to learn where to start pinpointing, specifically useful to find the cable end to prelocate low resistance faults

DC test (DC hipot)

Identifying the type of fault by applying a steadily increasing DC voltage and then measuring the actual breakdown voltage of the fault

Fault conversion (Burning)

Changing the characteristics of faults by igniting and maintaining an arc for a longer duration to create more favourable conditions, specifically for faults which are either difficult to ignite or difficult to stabilise

HV prelocation methods

Various technologies to get a distance to the fault and to learn where to start pinpointing in case of flashing faults such as high resistance faults and intermittent faults; most commonly used are Arc Reflection (ARM), current decoupling (ICE) and voltage decoupling (Decay)

Magnetic-acoustic pinpointing

Setting the surge generator (thumper) to repeatedly ignite the fault and then using the digiphone+2  surge wave receiver to precisely find the exact position of the fault by coinciding the sound signals with the magnetic signals (coincidence method or "thunder and lighting" method), suitable for high resistance faults and intermittent faults

Sheath integrity

Applying a continuous DC voltage to check whether the cable‘s outer sheath (outer jacket) has been damaged, and, if necessary, pinpoint the exact position of the sheath fault by a applying the voltage gradient method (step voltage method) using a pulsed DC voltage and the ESG digital earth fault locator
